Fueled by Nourish: Ali Maffucci

Inspiralized-15 copy copy

People all over the country are fueled by Nourish Snacks. We’re constantly inspired by the passion, creativity, and drive that we see in our customers. Our “Fueled by Nourish” series highlights some of these inspirational members of the Nourish family.

We caught up with Ali Maffucci, New York Times best-selling cookbook author, culinary entrepreneur, and food blogger behind Inspiralized about the importance of hydration and living a healthy lifestyle.

She has been referred to as a “digitally savvy millennial entrepreneur” as well as the creator of a “spiral empire” by Food & Wine Magazine and we’re so lucky to call her a fan!

Tell us about what you do.

I am the founder of the culinary brand Inspiralized, the ultimate resource for cooking creatively, healthfully and deliciously with the spiralizer, the kitchen tool that turns vegetables and fruits into noodles. In June of 2013, I quit my corporate job to pursue Inspiralized, starting first with my blog, inspiralized.com. My first cookbook, Inspiralized (now a New York Times bestseller!) was published in 2015  and I launched my branded spiralizer (The Inspiralizer) in the same year, which is now available at Amazon, select Whole Foods Markets and Williams-Sonoma.com. I live in Jersey City, NJ with my husband, Lu.

You can find me on social media here: Twitter / Facebook / Instagram

You’ve had an amazing journey to success in digital media. Tell us some of your biggest milestones.

Thank you! There have been two major moments with Inspiralized so far that totally humbled me. The first was when I made it to the New York Times bestseller list (what a bucket list item/dream!) and the other was when we received our first order from a major retailer for the Inspiralizer.

What does a typical day look like for you?

That’s always a tough question, because as an entrepreneur, there is no “typical” day. Every day is different and that’s one of the things that I love the most about what I do. I get to create something new every single day. But if I’m just working on the blog and recipe development (which I feel like I rarely ever do anymore because I’m running around!), it looks like this:

7-7:45am – wakeup, make coffee for my husband and walk him out the door. I can’t start my day without kissing him goodbye.

7:45 – 9:45am – have breakfast, prioritize my day, work through e-mails, respond to social media comments/posts and promote my post of the day

9:45 – 11:45am – I usually reserve this time for tying up loose ends, focusing on customer service for my product, the Inspiralizer, finishing up projects with brands, and getting ready for my day of recipe testing, which may include a quick trip to the grocery store.

11:45am – 2:45pm – This is when I have the most fun: cooking and experimenting in the kitchen! I’ll cook anywhere from 2-4 recipes, depending on how quickly I can move. After each recipe, I have to take photos, clean up, and then setup for the next one. I’m also Snapchatting and Instagramming the process! (Check out the raw beet salad she created with one of our snacks here.)

2:45 – 4:30pm – I upload my photos, edit them, and start to build new blog posts from those recipes. I try to finish them and schedule them out ahead of time.

4:30 – 6:30pm – I catch up on e-mails and organize myself for the following day. I always try to strategize at least one thing to do new the next day, whether that’s reaching out to a new brand, deciding to focus on a new social media tactic, or thinking up a new creative spiralized technique.

6:15 – Once Lu gets home around 6:30pm, I shut off work and spend time with him. I’m really conscious of separating myself from work and focusing on my other job: my marriage! JUSSTT kidding. My husband is an entrepreneur and understands that it’s a 24/7 gig, so he’s the best partner. We’ll go to the gym or go for a walk and then I come back and cook dinner for us (I cook Sunday – Thursday), which is usually a recipe I’m testing for the blog.

That’s a “typical” day!

What is the most nourishing part of your job?

When I receive an e-mail from someone who’s life has changed because of Inspiralized. I get e-mails from people all the time telling me that Inspiralized has changed the way they eat and has therefore changed their lifestyle, for the better! I’m so grateful to hear their stories and it’s what keeps me going day after day.

How do you stay energized during a busy day?

Making sure I stay hydrated! I always have a water bottle with me. Most people don’t realize that when you’re hungry, tired or have a headache, you’re probably just dehydrated.

What is inspiring you right now?

My home! I recently redecorated my living room and bedroom and now, I’m inspired in my space. Before, it was all my husband’s old bachelor-pad furniture and it was very dark. Not only that, but I felt like our home was a storage unit. A couple of months ago, I read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo and I swear, it’s truly transformed my every day. I’m more organized, more productive, more motivation, and more inspired. I now have a little nook in my living room that I can sit in when I’m having writer’s block or feeling lackluster and a few minutes in that chair rejuvenates me.

How do you get it all done?

Evernote. I couldn’t live my life without electronic to-do lists.

How to you nourish the ones you love?

By cooking! I love cooking for my loved ones – it’s a healthy way to get together and show your appreciation for people.

What do you snack on in the morning? Afternoon? Night?

Hot water with lemon every morning. I almost always have a piece of fruit between breakfast and lunch. In the afternoon, it’s always a kombucha and roasted veggies. At night, I’m into dried mango slices, frozen grapes, popcorn, almond butter with banana, or one of Nourish Snacks’ chocolate flavors.

What is your favorite Nourish Snacks flavor?

Coco’nilla Crunch or Cinn-Sational!
